“I’ve received a request from a client who wants stock photography of flames for a local news article. The type of fire captured should have a black background and be high definition with little to zero noise. Three to five photos in vertical orientation are required, 5000x pixels minimum." ~ Canh Dao, Vietnamese Greater Asia Division Manager
Process
This commission involved creating two distinct controlled environments to capture different fire elements.
For the indoor shots, I created a controlled studio environment in my room with blackboards as a backdrop, arranging candles as the sole light source. The completely darkened room maximized the warm candlelight glow, creating intimate, moody compositions with deep, rich shadows.
For the outdoor sequence, I set up a grill after sunset and worked to capture the dynamic movement of flames. This required rapid shutter adjustments to freeze the unpredictable fire patterns while maintaining enough exposure for detail.
